LOUISBURG, NC — The Louisburg College baseball team improved their early season record to 3-2 as they took down the Patriots of Patrick Henry CC in both end of a nonconference doubleheader, Sunday afternoon.
Tyler Holt (Raleigh, NC/Cary Academy) got the start in game one where he earned the win going five innings, giving up one run, on five hits. The sophomore righty also fanned six Patriot batters before giving way to Deshaun Hewitt (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Menchville HS) who threw three innings of solid relief. Shane Simpkins (Northampton, PA/Notre Dame Green HS) earned the save as he threw the scoreless ninth inning.
Daniel Batts (Knightdale, NC/Knightdale HS) got the start in game two where he went five innings deep but didn't figure in the decision as Spencer Bivens (Boalsburg, PA/State College HS) got the win out of the pen.
Shortstop, Kory Shumate (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) continues to swing it at the plate as the freshman went 2-4 in game one and 2-5 in game two. Thomas Gulley (Kent, OH/Stow HS) also had a pair of hits in each game as mirrored Shumate's 2-4 and 2-5 effort.
Freshman infielder, Timmy Carter (Lumberton, NC/South Robeson HS) only had one hit in game two, but it was a big one as he knocked a walk-off single with bases loaded in the 11th inning.
The Hurricanes will have a week to prepare for their next action as they host the CC of Rhode Island at Frazier Field next Sunday. First pitch in the nonconference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
